Raven Cage

back to overview

The stone Raven’s Cage in the Castle forecourt commemorates the well-known Legend of the Raven, which is associated with the Bishop of Merseburg Thilo von Trotha (1466-1514). It was probably the bishop’s coat of arms – a raven with a ring in its beak – that gave rise to the legend. Displayed on many public buildings at the time, the coat of arms was a testimony to the amount of building work being undertaken by the town and bishopric.
