City Walls
back to overview
Only a few remains are now left of the once mighty town wall, which Bishop Ekkehard had built in the year 1218. Of the seven towers only the Eulenturm, or Owl Tower, is still standing. From the Eulenturm, the fortified rampart and the monument to King Henry I can be seen. It was Henry I who turned Merseburg into a palatinate, and he is generally regarded as the town’s true founder.
